A woman had spinal surgery and a few days later developed tingling, numbness and pain in her hands, legs and toes. Calls to the doctor’s office told the patient to stay at home until a hospital bed was available. When the woman’s condition worsened, she arrived at the hospital admitting office, as instructed, and waited 5 hours before being seen by a doctor. Then the doctor took a CAT scan- which was the wrong test to evaluate her condition. The correct imaging test was done a day later, further delaying the correct diagnosis and treatment. When the correct diagnosis was actually made, the neurosurgeon delayed another 8-10 hours before taking the patient to the operating room.
